The B&O Railroad Museum is the site of the first railroad station in America. It was built in 1830 and was operational until 1972. The station was originally intended for freight trains, but as more people became interested in using this new mode of transportation, hotels were built to accommodate passengers. There was almost constant train traffic carrying goods and people from Baltimore to Ellicott City, which was known as Ellicott’s Mill’s until 1867. The station brought little Ellicott’s Mills instant fame. During the civil war the B&O Railroad transported troops and war supplies to the Northern armies.
